Netflix has officially begun production on its first original African series, Queen Sono. It is an action-packed spy thriller produced by Johannesburg-based Diprente, starring Pearl Thusi in the lead role.

She portrays the part of an unconventional spy working for an undercover South African agency. The agency is devoted to protecting the people of Africa.

Pearl Thusi is set to star in the lead role. Also starring in Africa’s first Netflix Original Queen Sono is Vuyo Dabula, Enhle Maphumulo, Loyiso Madinga,, Chi Mhende, Rob Van Vuuren, Khathu Ramabulana, Otto Nobela, Connie Chiume, James Ngcobo.

Showrunner and Director Kagiso Lediga will be joined by Cannas Lions and SAFTA Award-winning director Tebogo Malope. In the producer’s chair is Tamsin Andersson.

Pearl Thusi broke the news back in December when she said how much she’s looking forward to the “thrilling story about a kickass female spy.” She said on Twitter.

Netflix ordered a second Original series soon after Queen Sono was confirmed, showing that the streaming giant has faith in Africa’s production teams. The second series was picked up before production even started on Queen Sono.

Blood & Water will be directed by Nosipho Dumisa, a highly regarded up-and-coming director worldwide after the critical success of Nommer 37.

Queen Sono is expected to launch globally in 2020.
