Superstar Mason is back with a new project titled the Freedom Day Mixtape. He delivers this project under the Pseudonym Mason Mandela, making a clear statement that he’s here to lead the rap game out of the struggle. The Superstar from Soshanguve has delivered back to back projects since the release of his debut Album Price Of Fame.
Real names Masana Baloyi, Superstar Mason started his career at an early age when he recorded his first demo at the age of 13. Since then, he was always a familiar name amongst the hardcore hip-hop heads bagging serious street cred. He has always been bubbling under, dropping a number of singles and mixtapes over the years. However, it was in 2018 when he took it to another level, with the drop of his debut album titled Price of Fame.
Price of Fame shot him up to the radio waves and Tv screens, putting him in a position where he can actually live up to his name, Superstar. With the unexpected success of Price of Fame, Mason then decided to follow it up with his sophomore Project, The Struggle of the Dreamers. Mainly produced by Naptune, The Struggle of the Dreamers has been well received by his hip-hop orientated fan base which has always trusted him to deliver the necessary rap skills he promises on all his songs.
Since then, Mason has delivered hits like ‘Ka Nkane’ and has been nominated for various award shows. Some of them include various categories such as Best Artist, Best Male and Best Hip-Hop in the 2018 Soshanguve Music Awards. His single Plug 2 Da Game is heavily play listed on both TV and radio (Yfm, Tshwane FM, Motsweding FM, Mafikeng FM and Channel O)
The Freedom Day Mixtape seems to have come at the right time, following the struggle of what seemed to be a tough 2019 for SA Hip-Hop. Also just coming at a time where it seems like the public might be getting their freedom back, with the ease of Lock-Down restrictions in the country. Superstar Mason says the mindset behind Freedom Day Mixtape is setting the game free of all the negativity and hate that comes with it.
We had Kas’lam TV’s very own T. Rapz catch up with Superstar Mason to talk about the works and the grind of all it. When asked why he felt like he had to bring Mason Mandela to save the game the Rapper responded “I feel like there’s a lack of genuine love and respect in the game”. He continued to say “We need to be able to make more genuine and honest collaborations within the game itself”.
Mason goes beyond just being a rapper. He’s also an Entrepreneur who releases his music under his own company Tuff Jam Entertainment, which he co-owns with Kabelo Ashley ‘Hoodini’ Gabashane. The Superstar says his love for story telling goes beyond the music, he’s working on building platforms and connects to take his story telling to different platforms like the TV screens as well as the Big screens.
