Johannesburg, South Africa 21 May 2019. “The Adventures of Supermama” is set to open at selected cinemas nationwide on 14 June 2019.
Starring an A-list cast, this ground-breaking comedy film introduces a formidable new female superhero to South African audiences, unlike any superhero seen before. In her first feature film lead role, SAFTA award-winner Nomsa Buthelezi commands the screen as the stubborn and heroic Doris Ratabane, an ordinary family woman from Johannesburg with a dangerous passion for fighting crime. Featuring alongside Nomsa is the accomplished and much loved celebrity Desmond Dube and the impressive Michael Mabizela, who plays Doris’s husband Jabulani.
Making his film debut is martial arts expert Leo Ming, playing the pivotal role of Supermama’s Kung Fu master Mr Hung. Rounding out the cast, youthful actor Siyabonga Mtshali confidently appears as Doris’s number one fan (Tiny), together with Joe Vaz (Mr. Kilber) and EFC heavyweight fighter Bernardo Mikixi (Black Jack).
Director Karen van Schalkwyk says she is thrilled that audiences will have the opportunity to see the film on circuit. “It has been the culmination of many years of hard work. It was great fun making this film and it is fantastic that Supermama can finally have a life of her own and get out there into the world.”
The film has screened at numerous industry events, such as the 2018 editions of the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF), Jozi Film Festival and the Cape Town International Film Festival (CTIFF). The film was also nominated for Best Comedy of the Year at the African Movie Academy Awards 2018 – popularly known as AMAA. To add to the films’ growing list of successes, it is to be screened internationally as part of the official selection of the Africa Film Trinidad & Tobago Festival 2019, an annual showcase featuring the best of contemporary and classic films for the African diaspora.
“We are pleased that this unique and entertaining film will be released by Nu Metro and Century CinemaX. They are both very supportive partners of the developing South African film industry,” says producer Rory Downing of Waterfall Pictures. He goes on to say, “I believe that South African audiences want to be entertained. Judging by the recent success of comedy films, I think it is obvious that local cinema audiences would prefer to watch films that offer some relief and laughter from the everyday grind. Supermama is just that, a great vehicle to promote hope and overcome the odds.”
“Nomsa Buthelezi went the extra mile for her role as Supermama,” says producer Damon Berry. “Just wait until you see Nomsa in her fight sequences. She packs a punch!”
